Environmental Impact
The goal is to reduce harmful emissions from lawn mowers and power tools. According to the EPA, one new lawn mower produces the same amount of emissions as eleven new cars driving at 55 miles per hour.
We also aim to prevent pollution of soil and water by getting rid of gas and oil spills from landscape equipment like lawn mowers and leaf blowers. The EPA estimates that these tools cause about 17 million gallons of oil and gas to be spilled each year, which is the same amount as the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989.
Another benefit is the reduction of noise pollution. Professional lawn mowers and leaf blowers can make a lot of noise, about 110 decibels on average. That's as loud as a running garbage truck or a typical rock concert. However, battery-powered equipment operates at 60% lower decibel levels, making it much quieter.
By implementing sustainable landscape practices, we can create healthier environments for people, plants, and wildlife in our local communities. This will also help raise awareness about the importance of sustainable landscaping among residential and commercial property owners.
Financial Incentives
Lower operating costs – no gas cost (1 mower per hour = $5, 1 electric mower = 4 cents) Little to no equipment maintenance costs due to the simplicity of electric equipment engine. Solar charging of equipment available & equals zero energy operating cost.
Increased municipality bans on leaf blowers, the most notable example currently is Washington DC’s passing of the Leaf Blower Regulation Amendment Act phasing out the use of all gas powered blowers starting next year. Over 170 jurisdictions in 31 states with similar ban.
New client incentives – noise pollution reduction (from the equivalent of a garbage truck on the property to a cordless vacuum).
Potential tax break for employing sustainable services.
Equivalent or less cost than current landscape contractor, environmental impact All of the above for commercial clients with the addition of gaining a marketing angle by being at the forefront of maintaining a large campus in an eco-friendly and sustainable way.
Potential Federal and State funding for eco-friendly/sustainability minded businesses.
Potential tax break for operating a green business, for residential & commercial clients employing sustainable landscape practices, and investors funding a green industry business.
Barrier to entry for competition - Reluctance and/or inability of competitor contractors to adapt financially and conceptually – thousands to millions of dollars invested in gas-powered equipment with depreciated monetary (resale) value. Ignorance of new technology allowing for efficient gas-free work.
Landscape maintenance and installation averages 99 billion dollars annually. The largest company nationally, BrightView, represents only 3% of this revenue.
No landscape company currently offers completely emissions free services.
